Manik Bhan

Manik Bhan is one of the most complete cricketers of our club.  He could be considered a batting all-rounder.  He is your perfect number 6 batsman.  He can play the long innings when required, but he is most destructive when he goes out there in the death overs to get as many runs as possible.  He can clear the boundary with ease, and has hit some big sixes on almost every ground in the league.

Manik bats right handed but is a left arm medium fast bowler.  He comes in to ball in the middle overs, especially when the partnerships need to be broken.  He has always taken that important wicket when required.

And to top it all off, Manik is one of the best fielders of the club.  You can always count on him to take that catch on the boundary, no matter how difficult it might be.

Manik has also captained Oakville’s Premier team in the past, and is one of the hardest working and dedicated members of our club.

Most Memorable Performance

OCC’s Premier team faced off against Crescent in the 2011 Quarter Finals.  Crescent put up a big score of 279/8 in 40 overs.  Needing 280 to reach the Semi Finals, Majid Mahmood, who opened the batting, was batting beautifully, but wickets kept falling on the other end.

Manik walked in at number 7, with OCC still needing 144 runs to win in 115 balls – an uphill task.  Majid and Manik added 68 runs in 55 balls, and Majid got run out after scoring 93 valuable runs.  Manik had to make sure he carried the team to the finish line.  OCC still needed 76 runs in 54 balls.

He did not get a lot of support from the other end, but he kept the scoreboard ticking.  With some big sixes all over the ground, the game came down to just 8 runs required off the last 2 overs.  Sabir Awan of Crescent bowled a beautiful over, giving only one run and taking one wicket.  It was now upto Manik to score 7 runs off the last over to win one of the most remarkable chase ever.  With 3 runs to win off the last 2 balls, Manik mishit the ball, and ended up being caught, and with that out, OCC had lost the game by 2 runs.

Manik Bhan scored 91 runs in 58 balls, with 10 sixes and 2 fours.  Though this was a loss, and it still hurts Manik till today, the heroism and fight that Manik showed in that game has earned respect of his team-mates and opponents alike.
